Background

On the occasion of 100th Anniversary of Indonesian Awakening Day, KNIU – Unesco is planning to publish a book to honor Indonesian Woman Scientists who have made significant contributions to the advancement of science in Indonesia. Containing herstory in history , this book  aims to recognize outstanding individuals whose achievement, dedication, pioneering spirits, leadership, network and demonstrated inventiveness throughout their careers have improved our society and inspired others, notably young generation.

The book will contain exactly 100 herstories in history depicting the lives, works, spirits, dedication, and vision of 100 Indonesian woman scientists recognized for their reputation at national and international levels. Upon completion, the book will be officially launched at a national ceremony and then distributed to various stakeholders nationwide, including schools, universities, R&D institutions, and industries. It would become the source of inspiration for the government to  facilitate and nurture science and science activities, and for the industries and communities as a whole to create windows of opportunities for  beneficial applications of science.

Eligibility requirement (Criteria)

Candidates to be enlisted in the book are  role models in the various fields of science. They are Indonesian women scientists whose life-long careers in research, invention, and innovation have had a significant impact on society. They have the potential to be the role models and inspire inventiveness in others. Eligible candidates are evaluated by the following criteria:

  • Sustained exceptional achievements as evidenced by publications, inventions, awards, and other relevant form of recognition.
  • Recognized at national and international levels as a scientist, educator, leader in her field.
  • Demonstrated obsession, innovation and initiative in the pursuit of advancement in science
  • Exhibited exceptional dedication to facilitating young people   the entry to scientific world and to their advancement in scientific career

Nomination

The call for nomination will be advertised in the several national newspaper, TVs, KNIU-UNESCO website, and any other appropriate means such as Meet the Scientists at universities and R&D institutions. Anyone who meets the criteria above may be nominated. Nominations may be made by individuals other than the candidates themselves, group of researchers, universities, R&D institutions, and other appropriate bodies. Nominators are responsible that all necessary documentation is forwarded with the application. All nomination must include:

  • A completed application form for each nomination
  • A brief essay indicating the reason for the nomination
  • Nominee’s CV
  • Supporting documentation including publication citations, patents, etc.

All nomination documents should submitted KNIU - UNESCO no later than 30th December 2008.  

There is no restriction on the number of candidates nominated by any institution or nominator.

Selection

Candidates will be considered by a Selection Committee consisting of leaders and experts in science, business, and policy making. Selected candidates will then be notified and asked for their acceptance and will be required to write down their short profiles (guidelines will be provided).
