Bali Declaration of the E-9 Countries
Written by KNIU Staff
Thursday, 03 April 2008

PREAMBLE

1. We, the Ministers of Education, senior officials and representatives of the E-9 countries (Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Pakistan) met in Bali, Indonesia, on 10–12 March 2008 to strengthen our cooperation and accelerate our progress in Education for All (EFA). We express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to our Indonesian hosts for their warm hospitality and excellent logistical arrangements, as well as to UNESCO for facilitating the meeting. Special thanks are due to the host for its longstanding support to the E-9 Initiative since the first Ministerial Review Meeting in Bali in September 1995. We especially appreciated the commitment of His Excellency the Vice-President of Indonesia, H. E. Jusuf Kalla, to the cause of EFA and his expression of strong support for South-South cooperation in education. Following upon the 2006 Monterrey Declaration in Mexico, the Bali meeting was particularly significant as it focused on Improvement of Teacher Education and Training as a Focus of Educational System Reform.

2. We recognize that E-9 countries represent 60% of the world’s population and therefore welcome the progress towards the achievement of EFA in the E-9 countries since Dakar, most notably the significant improvement in gender parity in primary schooling, the advances towards Universal Primary Education and increased efforts to enhance quality education. At the same time, we acknowledge the vast EFA challenges which remain within our borders, in particular noting that two-thirds of the world’s illiterate adults live in the E-9 countries.

3. We recognise that the EFA goals will not be achieved globally if they are not achieved in the E-9 countries, noting that some countries may face greater challenges than others in meeting the EFA goals by the 2015 target date.

Lesson Plans for Life Competition
Written by Staf KNIU
Friday, 19 October 2007
It is with great pleasure that I invite your school to participate in the HIV and AIDS Lesson Plans for Life Competition.

This competition is being implemented by the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Nepal, Indonesia, Viet Nam and China, and is sponsored by the Japanese Government (Japanese Funds in Trust).

This project aims to encourage school teachers to create lesson plans on HIV and AIDS.   This will provide a bank of resources for your region on HIV and AIDS in local languages that are both relevant and engaging for young people.   Education is vital to protect young people from infection with HIV and increase their awareness of the impact of the disease.  There have been many changes in the past few years in technology, treatment and support for people living with HIV and AIDS.  This means that there is a renewed need for up-to-date educational resources in languages other than English.

This competition builds on the work of the UNESCO HIV and AIDS Coordination and School Health Unit in Bangkok, including the newly developed UNESCO HIV Preventive Education Information Kit for School Teachers and an online Teacher-Training Course on HIV and AIDS that is under development.

This Lesson Plans for Life Competition is a great opportunity for your staff to update their own knowledge and apply it creatively in the classroom.  In this way your school can show educational leadership and receive acknowledgement and prizes.

The competition is open to individuals and groups of teachers, which may also include you as a school principal.   We encourage you to display the competition poster and to distribute the competition kit with information to your staff.

We would like to wish your school success in the competition.  If you would like any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact Dra Hj. Hasnah Gasim  email: This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it
