The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, today condemned the murder of freelance journalist Herliyanto in Takoran, in the east of Java (Indonesia). “I condemn the brutal murder of Herliyanto,” the Director-General declared. “The extreme violence of his murderer, or murderers, is abhorrent. This heinous crime must not go unpunished. Violence against journalists represents an attack not just on individuals but on society as a whole. Freedom of expression is recognized as a basic right by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I trust that the Indonesian authorities will spare no efforts in finding the culprits and bringing them to trial.” |

UNESCO to help emergency relief for Indonesia with assistance in heritage, education and communication 07-06-2006 10:00 am UNESCO is to provide Indonesia with assistance in emergency heritage preservation, education and post trauma support for children, as well as communication, in the aftermath of the earthquake of 27 May that killed thousands of people on the island of Java. UNESCO’s participation in the international relief effort is included in the Indonesia Earthquake Response Plan, which was presented to donors in Geneva on 2 June. The Plan has been devised to raise funds from international donors to meet the Indonesian authorities’ request for emergency to communities affected by the earthquake.
